African Studies is an interdisciplinary examination of the African continent. A primary goal of the minor is the centering of African experiences in order to provide greater depth and breadth of knowledge around this continent, including its history, cultures, ecologies, economies, and more. Given the growing attention to and influence of Africa in international dynamics, there is reason to invest in improving our understanding of this continent.
Students are required to complete at least 18 credit hours that will introduce them to varying perspectives centered around study of the African continent. At least one elective (3 credits) must be based in experiential learning.
Declaring a Minor in African Studies
The African Studies minor is open to all UA undergraduate students. Students are expected to formally declare the African Studies minor with the assistance of the African Studies minor advisor, Dr. Courtney Helfrecht (chelfrecht@ua.edu).
