The Computing, Data, and AI Literacy minor provides students from any major with essential knowledge and practical skills in modern computational thinking, data-driven problem solving, and artificial intelligence tools. The minor introduces foundational concepts in data management, statistical reasoning, digital technologies, and machine learning while emphasizing ethical and responsible use of emerging technologies.
Students completing the minor will be able to:

Recognize how AI and data systems are used in common applications, workplaces, and daily life.

Organize and interpret basic data sets using tools such as Excel or simple visualization software.

Describe how computers and AI make decisions and how people can use those tools ethically and responsibly.

The minor in Computing, Data Science and AI Literacy (offered by the Department of Computer Science) is primarily designed for students who are seeking to become computing and AI literate in today's rapidly advancing technology. For students in the Barefield College of Arts and Sciences, at least two CS courses must be 300 level or higher.
Grade Point Average
A 2.0 grade point average in the minor is required. The minor GPA is calculated based on all courses applicable to the minor that the student has attempted at UA.
Upper-level Residency
For students in the Barefield College of Arts & Sciences, a minimum of six hours of 300- or 400-level courses in the minor must be earned on this campus.
Ancillary Courses
This minor does not require ancillary courses.
Additional Minor Requirements
Students are responsible for ensuring that they have met all University, College, major and minor requirements. However, each student must meet with an advisor in the major department for academic planning and to be cleared for registration each semester. College advisers are also available for additional assistance with minor, College and University requirements.
