The Policy, Leadership, and Public Service minor is designed to provide Shelby Scholars with a comprehensive, interdisciplinary understanding of the American political system, leadership, and policymaking processes. Rooted in a nonpartisan approach, the minor will emphasize practical, hands-on, and experiential learning, positioning students to succeed in careers within government, law, public policy, the private sector, and nonprofit organizations, as well as to pursue graduate studies in law, international studies, public administration and related fields.
The PLPS curriculum will integrate themes curated by the SIPL to ensure that Shelby Scholars achieve consistent learning outcomes. Unlike other minors such as Political Science, Public Policy Studies, or Civic Engagement and Leadership, the proposed PLPS minor highlights Institute-selected themes focused on contemporary societal challenges while grounding coursework in political science, economics, business, communication, sociology, and law. This structure will prepare students to critically analyze complex policy issues and apply innovative solutions to real-world challenges.
